The trademark American creation, the backyard deck, brings to mind images of perfect summer afternoons napping in a hammock or holiday cookouts around the grill. However, maintaining an elevated expanse of lumber can be an absolute chore, especially considering all the upkeep and refinishing that wood requires.

Composite deck components are typically made from a combination of wood and plastic, which are processed to give the appearance of wood. Both the wood byproducts (sawdust, chips and wood fiber) and the plastic can be made from new or recycled materials.

Manufacturers use a proprietary mix of these materials, often adding a pigment and preservatives. The mixture is heated, formed into board-shaped lengths and then cooled. The resulting board of composite decking is usually heavier than wood but not as strong. But composite decking is resistant to rot, doesn't warp, won't give people splinters, and doesn't need to be painted, stained or sealed.

The fact that most composites have a hard time feeling or looking exactly like real wood is usually beside the point. Once installed, Atlanta composite decks simply do their job and don't need much more than an annual wash, leaving you plenty of time to spend in the hammock.
